This paper evaluates the effectiveness of hiring incentives for open-ended contracts in shaping the career trajectories of affected employees. Using rich administrative data from Tuscany, which provides detailed employment histories, we examine both the immediate policy uptake, focusing on the transitions of young workers from fixed-term to open-ended contracts, and its medium-term impact on workersÂ’ careers. To identify these effects, we employ an event study research design that exploits the deterministic eligibility criteria of the policy.
